In the first episode, we meet the Rookies up close.
They're a cast of amateur runners brave enough to take on Ironman Triathlon.
When was the last time you tried something new? When was the last time you set yourself a lofty goal? When you were a newbie or a rookie at something? When we think of what is holding us back, the majority of the time it comes down to one thing, fear.
The fear of the unknown, the fear of being uncomfortable, the fear of not knowing, the fear of looking stupid, the fear of failure.
The Rookies project is all about creating an environment that celebrates and embraces this fear, removing the barriers that are perceived to be in-front of us, creating a community that chases ambition together, through the ups and the downs, the laughs and the cries, because in the end things are better celebrated together.
This season sees an eclectic group from Sydney coming together to complete their first ironman distance triathlon, what many deem as the ultimate one day endurance test. Some have a team sports background, others very little endurance pedigree, some have big ambitions, some are just along for the ride and aim to finish. We will be along for the ride as we capture their journey to the red carpet at the Asia Pacific Championships at Cairns Ironman in June.
Day job: Telecommunications
“I have no history with Triathlon, never done a marathon and only started cycling 6 months ago. My first Ironman is a goal that’s scary enough to get me up in the morning to train”
Day Job: Recruiter
“I’ve competed in Olympic triathlons, and have done a half ironman. I can’t think of a better way to embark on the Cairns Ironman journey than with this group of legends/first timers”
Day Job: Teacher
“2021. Let’s go one bigger and better. I’ll have three 70.3 races under my belt by the time Cairns full Ironman comes around so hopefully I’m ready spaghetti :)”
Day Job: Trader
“This will really test my mental strength and physical ability, and in the end break me. It’s going to hurt. Can’t wait.”
Day Job: Panel Beater
“I’ve completed Noosa Tri and Husky Tri (Half IM Distance) so I felt it was only appropriate to finish a Full IM. This has been on my radar for years and now is the time to commit to it”.
Day Job: Fitness Coach
“This is my ultimate Tri test, from the training process to understanding what the human body and mind is capable of. I can’t wait to rip in with ‘The Rookies’”
Day Job: Lawyer
“Cairns ’21 is the perfect backdrop to accompany my world of pain. Coupled with a swim in the ocean to give some extra flotation for my plump behind, a tough ride and flat run, it’s an awesome combination”.
Day Job: Civil Construction
“Can’t wait to train and complete the journey along the way with some great mates, lots of support and many snacks to keep us going”.
Day Job: Lawyer
“I’ve completed the New York Marathon and several ultra marathons, but never a full Ironman Triathlon. Cairns 2021 is going to change that!”
Find out the ‘who, what, why’ as The Rookies contemplate the challenge in front of them. From lawyer, teacher, panel-beater to surf-life-saver, our team of first-timers share their Ironman Triathlon ambitions before things start to get very, very real.
